About Us

The Institute for Human Development (IHD) established in 1996 under the aegis of the Indian Society of Labour Economics (ISLE), is an Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR) recognized Institute.  It is a non-profit autonomous institution which undertakes research in the areas of growth and employment, livelihood, health and nutrition, education and other aspects of human development. The Institute aims to contribute towards building a society that fosters and values an inclusive social, economic and political system that is free from poverty and deprivations.

Aims and Objectives

The Institute for Human Development is committed to an inclusive growth path. It aims to contribute towards building a society that fosters and values an inclusive social, economic and political system that is free from poverty and deprivation.
The primary objectives of the Institute are to:

  • Undertake research in the areas of labour markets and employment, livelihood, and other aspects of human development;
  • Evaluate development policies and programmes;
  • Organise seminars, workshops and lectures of academic and policy interest and contemporary relevance;
  • Conduct courses and training programmes on human development issues;
  • Network with similar institutions, both in India and abroad, to facilitate greater sharing of information and ideas through joint collaborations and partnerships; and
  • Publish books, journals, research reports, working papers and monographs on the above issues.

Recognition and Empanelment

The Institute has gained widespread recognition for its activities and has been empanelled by several organisations for understanding research and other activities in collaboration with them.

  • Designated as an “ICSSR-Recognised” Category Institute by the Indian Council of Social Science Research;
  • A Knowledge Partner of NITI Aayog for collaborative activities of transformative policy research through SAMAVESH – a programme of networking and partnerships with knowledge and research institutions;
  • Recognised by the Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India as a “Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation”;
  • Empanelled with the Niti Aayog for “Outsourcing of Monitoring and Evaluation Studies”
  • National Level Monitor with Ministries of Rural Development, Panchayati Raj and Drinking Water; and
  • Recognised as a “Centre of Excellence” for research on tribal development by the Ministry of Tribal Affairs, Government of India.
